Operational Workforce Planning Webinar Series 2024

The Center for Evidence to Practice has released a 5-part live series called Operational Workforce Planning. This series is suited for both existing crisis response providers as well as those seeking to be a part of the Louisiana Crisis Response System. Louisiana Peer Action and Advocacy Coalition (LaPAAC) Peer Interviews

The LaPAAC interviews are part of the Mental Health Crisis Response Training and Workforce Development Initiative, a collaboration between the Center for Evidence to Practice and the Louisiana Department of Health – Office of Behavioral Health. Throughout these interviews, you’ll hear from people with lived experiences and how they encounter and navigate crisis response in Louisiana.

TW: Involuntary hospitalization, incarceration

Biff Hitchins is interviewed by Angela Lorio, a LaPAAC member, about his experiences navigating the mental health crisis system as a person with lived experiences. Biff speaks about his time under involuntary hospitalization and his time incarcerated. He offers ideas around ending stigma related to mental health.

Michelle Graffeo is interviewed by Nancy Hughes, a LaPAAC member, about her experiences navigating the mental health crisis system as a person with lived experiences and a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Michelle shares her early struggles with mental health and how she navigated services as a LGBTQIA+ youth and adult. She tells us why it’s important to share stories and the benefits of having a peer involved in every level of care.

TW: Suicide, substance use, addiction, child sexual abuse, sexual assault

Jeremy Weatherspoon is interviewed by Nikki Coscino, a member of the Louisiana Peer Action Advocacy Coalition (LaPAAC) about his experiences navigating the mental health crisis system as a person with lived experiences. Jeremy speaks to the importance of having empathy and providing person-centered care to individuals in crisis.

 TW: Suicide, police brutality

DeJohn Scott is interviewed by Katherine Penton about his experiences navigating the mental health crisis system as a person with lived experiences and as a Black man in the United States. Both DeJohn and Katy are members of the Louisiana Peer Action Advocacy Coalition (LaPAAC). DeJohn speaks to his experiences with involuntary care and law enforcement. He tells us about the role decriminalizing mental health and public dialogue about mental health will help many people seeking the care they need.

Advanced Training Recordings

As part of the Mental Health Crisis Response Workforce Development, below are recordings from advanced training sessions held by the Center for Evidence to Practice. Stay tuned for recording training on topics, such as crisis responders working with law enforcement, responding to individuals living with intellectual and development disabilities, and more. 

This training covers law enforcement culture, the interaction with mental health professionals and tips to keep in mind when understanding the interaction between both professionals. The training is led by Eve Fitch, LCSW, and Joe Smarro, former law enforcement officer.

Creating and Sustaining Regional Coalitions: A Guide

The Center for Evidence to Practice has created a regional coalition guide (in two formats) for Louisiana Crisis Response System (LA-CRS) providers to use as a resource when developing and sustaining regional coalitions.
